P042F

P042F code: EGR stuck closed, causes and diagnosis on a Ford Transit

Understand P042F, compare commanded and actual EGR position and check the circuit before replacement. Includes a real Ford Transit repair.

P042F can appear alongside a major loss of power, making an immediate EGR replacement seem like the obvious answer. The first step, however, is to understand what the control unit detected: a control condition consistent with a valve remaining closed when a different response was expected. That points the investigation in a direction, but does not yet explain why it happened.

At Motores al Detalle, we encountered this code on a Ford Transit 2.2 TDCi that entered limp mode. In that repair, the EGR valve was replaced and the vehicle's behavior improved during the road test. What P042F means

P042F identifies exhaust gas recirculation control A stuck closed. Ford's code list includes this definition. The letter A is part of the system identifier: it does not, by itself, locate a component without the vehicle's service information. F1: 2012 OBD-II Codes

“Stuck” describes the engine controller's interpretation, not a physical inspection of the mechanism. Before deciding between a jammed valve, an incorrect signal or an actuation problem, you need to check how the assembly responds.

A closed EGR valve is not always faulty

The EGR valve does not need to remain open continuously. Its operation depends on engine conditions, and a closed position can be entirely normal. A scan-tool screenshot showing the valve closed is therefore not enough to explain the code.

The useful comparison is between the command and the response. Ford describes that principle in its OBD documentation for the 6.4 L diesel. Symptoms that may accompany it

In our Transit case, the limitation was so severe that the van would not exceed approximately 50 km/h in limp mode. That was the situation in that particular job, not a speed limit imposed on every vehicle by P042F.

Other EGR system problems may be accompanied by a warning light, poor response or irregular running. Not every symptom has to occur, and symptoms alone cannot distinguish an electrical fault from a mechanical one. F3: Exhaust gas recirculation – EGR valve

Where to begin the diagnosis

Before clearing codes, save the complete scan and any available operating conditions recorded when the fault occurred. Note whether it happens cold, hot, while driving or after a repair. This is more useful than repeatedly clearing the code and checking only whether it returns.

Identify the engine and variant using the vehicle documentation. This guide does not provide universal pin assignments, voltages or percentages: a measurement only makes sense when you know which circuit you are testing and the correct reference for it.

If Ford P1303, relating to EGR calibration, or Ford P1335, relating to EGR position stops, also appears, consider them together. That does not mean three different parts have failed; they are different observations about a shared system.

Check the circuit before condemning the valve

Start with accessible items: a properly seated connector, sound terminals and wiring without chafing or questionable repairs. A connector that appears to be installed can still have a damaged terminal, so inspecting only the plastic housing is not enough.

Then follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram to check power, ground and the relevant control or position lines for that design. Do not improvise jumpers or apply power directly to unknown terminals. Compare commanded and actual position

Where these data are available, watching command and feedback lets you ask precise questions: is movement being requested, does the reported position change, is the response repeatable, and does the reading remain fixed even when the command changes?

Do not compare percentages from different vehicles as though they shared a common scale. Nor should a steady reading condemn a valve when no position change is being requested. Check what each parameter represents and the conditions in which it should be assessed.

An actuator test can help when supported by both the vehicle and the tool. Follow the applicable procedure and keep your hands away from the mechanism. If there is no response, you still need to distinguish a command that never arrives from faulty actuation or position feedback that does not reflect what happened.

Deposits, mechanism and gas passages

If electrical checks do not explain the problem, inspect the mechanism and passages according to the vehicle's access and service procedure. Avoid another diagnostic shortcut here: seeing deposits does not automatically prove they are the main cause. The decision to clean or replace should reflect the assembly's condition and what the tests actually showed.

Do not force the mechanism or immerse its electronics in cleaning fluid. Use methods compatible with the component. Removing a cooled EGR assembly also requires following the cooling-system procedure and working with the system cold and depressurized.

Clean, adapt or replace?

These are different operations. Cleaning addresses deposits, repairing a wire addresses a connection fault, and replacement removes a defective component. None should be chosen merely because it is the most common solution in a video.

Some systems require an adaptation or basic setting after electronic components are replaced. Motorservice explains this general requirement, but whether it applies depends on the vehicle. Do not run a scan-tool function just because its name sounds similar without confirming it is the correct one. F5: Adaptation to engine management

Adaptation cannot repair damaged gears, a faulty connector or a valve that cannot move. The assembly must first be installed correctly and function properly; only then should the manufacturer-required adjustments be performed.

The real Ford Transit 2.2 TDCi case

Our Transit registered P042F, P1303 and P1335 alongside severe power loss. Gerardo chose to replace the EGR based on the symptoms and his experience with that fault. We do not present that job as though every general test described in this guide had been performed.

During removal, a lower connection was difficult to reach. Removing the cooling fan created enough room to extract the valve. After reassembly, the road test showed that the van no longer entered limp mode. The complete sequence is in the Ford Transit EGR repair article.

That result confirms how that vehicle behaved during the test. It does not turn EGR replacement into a guaranteed solution for every P042F or establish the precise internal defect of the removed part.

If the code returns after the repair

Before buying another EGR, review what actually changed: replacement part number, installation, connectors and the conditions in which the fault occurs. Read all codes again and compare measurements with the previous results. Clearing a warning is not a repair, and a light staying off briefly does not replace a functional check.

When safe, test the vehicle under the specified conditions and check whether codes return. An abnormal response that remains requires further diagnosis, not a growing list of parts replaced by elimination.

Can you keep driving?

Do not decide from the code number alone. If the vehicle loses substantial power or cannot keep up safely, do not force a test in traffic; arrange assistance. A verification drive is only appropriate when the vehicle's condition makes it safe.

The key to P042F is checking the relationship between what is requested of the EGR and what the system detects. The code points you in a direction; testing and post-repair verification determine what should be repaired.
