Renault Kangoo 1.5 dCi K9K maintenance: oil, filters, inspection and headlight polishing

The Purflux LS933 reference is used for Renault Kangoo 1.5 dCi/K9K applications and is also listed for the Kangoo Express/Rapid 1.5. AUTODOC

The first step was to raise the van so we could comfortably reach the underside of the engine.

One point is especially important here: once the vehicle is raised, it must be properly supported on axle stands before working underneath. Relying only on the jack to hold the van up during the service is not advisable.

With the Kangoo safely supported, we removed the undertray to reach the lower part of the engine.

Before draining all the oil, we started by removing the filter.

Because of the filter position, some of the oil left inside comes out when it is unscrewed and can fall onto different parts of the engine. To avoid making an unnecessary mess, we placed absorbent paper around and below the filter before removing it.

This catches a large part of the oil that inevitably spills when the filter is taken out.

After removing the used filter, we carefully cleaned its mounting area before fitting the new Purflux LS933 oil filter.

We also removed the oil residue that had spilled, using paper and a little brake cleaner.

It is a simple detail, but leaving the area clean after the service also makes it easier to spot a genuine oil leak later.

With the vehicle raised and the undertray removed, we reached the sump drain plug.

On this Kangoo, the plug is removed with an 8 mm square bit.

We removed the plug and let the used oil drain until the sump was empty.

While the oil finished draining, we used the opportunity to carry out a brief general inspection underneath the vehicle.

A service is also a good opportunity to inspect components that are not usually so easy to see.

We visually checked the brake pads, tyres and shock absorbers. In this case they were in good condition and no additional repair was needed.

We also visually inspected the auxiliary belt for cracks, deterioration or obvious signs of wear.

A maintenance inspection does not have to be limited to changing oil and filters. Using the time while the vehicle is already raised can reveal wear before it becomes a fault.

Once the oil had finished draining, we installed a new washer on the drain plug.

The plug was then refitted and the undertray installed again.

With the underside finished, we lowered the Renault Kangoo and continued working from the engine bay.

For this service we used Motul 5W-30 meeting the Renault RN0720 specification.

Five litres of oil were added during this job before we continued with the rest of the service.

After filling, it is important to check the oil level correctly and check it again after starting the engine and allowing the lubricant to circulate through the filter and the rest of the system.

The next job was to replace the Bosch N 2825 fuel filter.

This filter uses a housing held together by six screws.

We removed the six screws, opened the housing and took out the old filter element.

The O-rings supplied with the new filter were also replaced. Changing them with the filter is important to ensure the circuit seals correctly.

Once the new filter element was in place, the cover was refitted using the new screws supplied with the Bosch filter.

We then checked that everything had been correctly assembled before starting the engine.

With the oil and filters replaced, we started the engine.

This first start allows the oil to circulate through the entire system again, fills the new oil filter and lets fuel reach the circuit correctly after replacing the diesel filter.

After letting the engine run, we checked the completed service again and made sure there were no visible leaks.

We also took the opportunity to check the van’s different service-fluid levels.

The coolant was checked and the windscreen-washer reservoir was topped up, leaving the levels ready before completing the job.

The headlights on this Renault Kangoo were not badly deteriorated, but their finish could be improved.

We polished them with a drill fitted with a polishing pad and 3M fine polishing compound.

We worked progressively over the headlight surface until its transparency and finish improved.

It was not an aggressive restoration because the headlights were already in reasonably good condition, but the visual difference after polishing was quite clear.

After the service, the Renault Kangoo had fresh oil and filters, checked fluid levels and several mechanical components inspected.

We also used the job to check the brakes, tyres, shock absorbers and auxiliary belt, and finished by improving the appearance of the headlights through polishing.

This type of preventive maintenance is especially useful on working vehicles such as the Renault Kangoo: besides replacing the required consumables, it allows the van’s general condition to be checked and potential problems to be found before they cause a breakdown.
